As many of you may know, I am slightly obsessed with fashion. I can probably list more designers and brands than I can family members, and it’s okay! So it’s only makes sense that I have an internship in the fashion industry. I am currently an intern for Fashion 360 Magazine, which is a fashion magazine based in New York City. When first being hired for this internship, I was slightly terrified because it was my first internship doing something I am genuinely interested in. Once interacting with editor and other employees, I realized that the fashion industry isn’t as cutthroat as “Devil Wears Prada” as many make it out to be.
After interning for a month with the company, I realized that the company values open communication between the writers and the editors. I have the ability to email my editor-in-chief about any concerns I have about missing a deadline or an article I recently written. My editor values the work I put into the articles I have written, and she wants to make sure that my work does not go unnoticed. This can be seen in the speedy responses whether that is through email or even texting.
Even though I am the youngest writer on the team, I am not treated as just an “intern.” I am given the same opportunities as all other writers, which at first was slightly terrifying. One of the opportunities was being able to cover one the biggest fashion events in the world known as New York Fashion Week. Being only 19 at the time, going to New York Fashion Week was a dream I had since I watched “Devil Wears Prada” and the fact have the opportunity to attend this event at such an early age was unbelievable.
At Fashion 360 Magazine, you can obviously tell that the editors and writers value creative expression. I remember meeting one of my colleagues at a London Fashion Week event, and talking about how her she writes for the magazine as a hobby, but her actual job is working for a nonprofit. She constantly told me how lucky I was I was getting involved in the fashion industry at such a young age, and how much she wished she had the same opportunity as me. It shows that even if the employees actual career is nowhere near involved in fashion, they still value the ability to express themselves in a creative manner.
The company also rewards their writers. For example, last winter my editor hosted a Christmas party at their office in New York. The party had live entertainment, a manicure bar, free drinks, and a gift bag at the end of it all. This showed me that the company really wants to show that they value what we offer to magazine and wants us to continue to have fun with what we are doing.
This internship has taught me to value positions where I can express myself freely and have the ability to speak my editor, manager, or supervisor about any concerns I may have. Fashion 360 Magazine set the bar for internships for me, making me never wanting to settle for less.
Hi Jess,
Congratulations on such a cool internship. I'm glad that you had the opportunity to be placed in such a unique internship experience. Being able to express yourself in your work is something I hold very important as well, and seeing you get to do that is wonderful. Good luck with the rest of the semester.
Lindsey
Jess,
It was interesting to hear about this internship experience! It's great that you had such a positive experience and you were also conscious of how good of an opportunity it was to get involved with fashion at a young age. It can be intimidating to go into any new workplace, let alone something that is actually important to you, so I can understand where you're coming from there. I hope in the future you have more opportunities that live up to this one!
I am really glad to hear you are having a good experience in New York City. It can be an environment, like the Devil Wears Prada movie, so your boss needs to consciously create a better environment where you feel your work is respected and valued.
